Mindful Self-Compassion (MSC), is an 8-week training program designed to support participants to respond more effectively to life’s challenges and disappointments with greater understanding, care, kindness and wise action.

Mindful Self-Compassion is based on the groundbreaking research and empirically-supported work of Kristin Neff and Christopher Germer.

The three key components of self-compassion are self-kindness, a sense of common humanity, and balanced, mindful awareness

  • Practicing loving kindness allows us to keep our hearts open in moments of struggle and suffering, so we can give ourselves what we need in each moment.
  • Seeing our common humanity opens us to interconnectedness, and we recognize we are not alone.
  • Mindfulness opens us to the present, so we can see more clearly what is happening, so we can accept our experience with more ease and enables us to respond rather than react.
  • Together, these components comprise a state of warm-hearted, connected presence to ourselves and those around us.

Self-compassion can be learned by anyone, even those who didn’t receive enough affection in childhood or who feel uncomfortable when they are good to themselves. It’s a courageous attitude that stands up to harm, including the harm that we unwittingly inflict on ourselves through self-criticism, self-isolation, or self-absorption. Self-compassion provides emotional strength and resilience, allowing us to admit our shortcomings, motivate ourselves with kindness, forgive ourselves when needed, relate wholeheartedly to others, and be more authentically ourselves.

A rapidly expanding body of research demonstrates that self-compassion is strongly associated with emotional well-being, less anxiety, depression and stress, maintenance of healthy habits such as diet and exercise, and satisfying personal relationships.

This course is based on the work and book “Self-Compassion eight-week Mindful Self-Compassion (MSC) program, guided meditations (with audio downloads); informal practices to do anytime, anywhere; exercises; and vivid stories of people using the techniques to address relationship stress, weight and body image issues, health concerns, anxiety, and other common problems. The seeds of self-compassion already lie within you–learn how you can uncover this powerful inner resource and transform your life.
